Why Most Web Copy is Ineffective

Most web copy falls into one of two categories.

Category One:
“I think your customers are simple-minded, so I’m going to try and trick them by jamming your copy full of catch-phrases, clichés, and false promises. Here’s your 10,000 word sales page that includes the phrase, ‘but wait… there’s more’!” – and includes copious amount of yellow-highlighted text at absolutely no extra charge. (If you buy now, of course)

Category Two:
“I have an Ivy League degree in linguistics and I can prove it by producing grammatically correct English while using long, impressive words. Aren’t I just the necrotype of copywriting with perhaps just a modicum of autolatry thrown in? ”

Um, what?

See? That’s the problem. Flip a coin.

Heads you get hokey old P.T. Barnum, – tails and it’s stuffed-shirt Professor Whifflesnap writing your copy. Talk about a lose-lose proposition, right?

That’s kind of a light and funny analogy – but the message here isn’t light at all. It’s serious business that greatly impacts your bottom line.

Consumers hate, hate, HATE to be sold – but they love to buy. They want to be talked with – not talked at or talked down to.

They see overly salesy copy as insincere and insulting. They find dry, academic copy pretentious and boring. So what’s the answer? What kind of copy resonates with today’s consumers?
